Health Officials Call for Caution After UK Variant Becomes Dominant in Los Angeles County
May 27, 2021
After causing countless infections in different parts of the U.S., the U.K. COVID-19 variant seems to have spread all over Los Angeles County. An article by The Hill titled "UK Variant Now Dominant in Los Angeles County
" reveals that the U.K. variant has surpassed two California strains to become the dominant COVID-19 mutation in the area.
The L.A. County Public Health Laboratory identified the U.K.-originated strain in more than half of the 40 specimens studied for their research. The Brazilian and South African variants were also found among their samples.
With most COVID-19 restrictions scheduled to end on June 15th, health officials, including the Los Angeles County Health Department, have been urging Californians to remain vigilant while following safety guidelines. Their statements have been especially focused on unvaccinated individuals who might be acting as incubators of different strains of the COVID-19 virus. Meanwhile, California authorities have been adamant in their resolution to maintain all restrictions in place until the specified target date, even after some states started lifting mask mandates and other such regulations. While addressing the decision, Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said that residents needed "time to prepare for this change while we continue our relentless focus on delivering vaccines, particularly in underserved communities."
